Whitman College Art Department

Drawing is one of the most immediate and important forms of expression artists have at their disposal. It is a tool of observation, expression, and discovery in visual art. Drawing is also a valuable tool for learning strategies of creative problem solving and is applicable to many disciplines both in and outside of art.

Through a variety of studio assignments students will gain an awareness of drawing techniques and explore many approaches to the medium. Drawing courses will expose students to working with a wide range of drawing materials, tools, and media. In Intermediate and Advanced Courses, subject matter as a source of meaning and a form of expression will be emphasized more deeply.

Class group critiques, and one on one discussions with faculty will give students the opportunity to utilize critical judgment and assessment strategies on their own images and the work of others.
