The first exhibit of the Sheehan Gallery’s  2014 fall season, “POST-RURAL,” opens August 29th and runs through October 8th.

Originally curated by Assistant Professor of Art at University of Montana Missoula, Matt Hamon, this thought provoking display was brought to the Sheehan Gallery by one of the show’s initial participants and Whitman Assistant Professor of Art, Nicole Pietrantoni. The exhibition highlights a group of artists “whose work engages with the shifting notions of rural spaces.” In addition to the original nine individuals featured in this “loose collective,” three Walla Walla participants have been added, including artist and writer, Ian Boyden, and Whitman studio art professors, Michelle Acuff and Charles Timm-Ballard.

As a sculptor and installation artist, I involve viewers in a phenomenological situation, in which the experience of objects is ambiguous, corporal and direct. During the last year I have been developing works that pronounce ecological devastation as a manifestation of the contemporary sublime. I marry ersatz images and industrially produced commercial objects with the sedulously organic and hand-made. This irreverent material stew articulates the tenuousness of my connection to the natural world, the precarity of the environmental and social realities we face, and a range of my own material, psychological and emotional responses to them.
