Body of Work: The Process Paintings of Margaret Jamison
July 22th - September 16th, 2016
Artist Reception on Friday, September 2nd, 4:00-7:00pm
Within the essays held in Empathy Exams, Leslie Jamison draws on her own life experiences to “ask essential questions
about our basic understanding of others: how should we care about one another? How do we feel another person’s
pain?”
Margaret Jamison’s Body of Work, considers similar issues through the visual media of painting. Created for personal
containment and catharsis and generated through the mode of process painting (a technique following a stream of
consciousness style of production), the seventeen pieces in Body of Work trace the timeline of the artist’s diagnosis,
treatment, and recovery from cancer.
The image featured on this postcard, Before and After, was featured in the 2012 book Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions
of a Cancer Journey. Informed by her knowledge of design and art history, Jamison’s deeply psychological artwork has
often been autobiographical in its origins. However, Body of Work stands apart from many of her other series in its
imagistic potency and honest depictions of her personal experience of loss and the process of recovery.
Margaret Jamison holds an undergraduate degree in art and an MA in Art Education.
With over a thirty-year career in the visual arts and its related fields her art
historically informed portfolio contains a wide range of media that includes
painting, drawing, photography, collage, assemblage, and sculpture. She has
participated in numerous solo, group, and juried exhibitions in the Pacific
Northwest.
In addition to her creative practice, Margaret Jamison is also an instructor of
art at Walla Walla Community College where she teaches both studio art and
art history.
This exhibition has been sponsored by Whitman College’s Office of
Student Programs and Activities and the Office of the President.
